One of the most important pieces of hoisting safety is proper training. Hoists are powerful pieces of equipment and operating one should not be taken lightly, ever. All of those who are going to operate a hoist should be well versed in the proper handling of the hoist. Before operating a Davit crane or a Ross hoist, you should always read the manufacturer’s manual and the operation instructions. You should always know the rated capacity of the hoist because it should always be clearly labeled on the equipment.
Another critical part of hoist safety is regular inspections and maintenance. Every time you use your comealong or other hoist equipment, you should inspect it to make sure it’s in good working order. Daily inspections should be performed and it’s easy to keep track of these inspections with a check sheet.
There are a few different things to look for during an inspection. You should make sure that the guards on the moving components are in the right place. You should also test the brake stop before ever lifting a load. If you hear a grinding sound or vibration during a lift, it could signify a problem. You want to inspect the hooks for deformations and cracks. It’s also crucial to verify that the ropes and chains are free from wear, tear, and twisting. If you come across any parts that are thinner in their diameter, straying fibers or places where the fibers or strands lift away from the core, you may need to take your machine in for a repair.
